Introduction: In May 2012, ASUSTEK Computer Inc. (ASUS), the Taiwan-based computer hardware and electronics company, obtained the prestigious IECQ (IEC Quality Assessment System for Electronic Components) HSPM (Hazardous Substance Process Management) certification to become the first company in the world to do so. The company received Application Level A+ by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) for its 2011 and 2012 corporate sustainability reports. ASUS’s products were ranked the highest among Environmentally-Friendly Electronic Products in the 2010 Greenpeace Electronics Survey .

ASUS, the world’s fifth-largest PC vendor as of 2012 (after HP, Lenovo, Dell, and Acer), was largely involved in the manufacture and distribution of computers, communication products, and consumer electronics (3C). ASUS had around 50 service sites across 32 countries and had more than 400 service partners globally. It achieved revenues of US$14 billion with 12,500 employees worldwide in 2012.

ASUS had a history of bagging many awards for its innovations and its green initiatives, both regionally and internationally, and had a track record as an innovator that went back several years. ASUS had been focusing on many green products. Its most important green product was the first halogen-free monitor, the VW247H-HF, which was considered one of the greenest consumer electronics products in the market.
